I’m a big fan of Gyoza and this place is awesome! Located on the picturesque Kiyamachi Dori (street) in the heart of Kyoto.
We stayed in Kyoto for three nights and had dinner at Chao Chao on two of them! The place is tiny and cramped but the atmosphere is spectacular! You have to queue up outside to get a seat (unless you have a reservation) and you could be waiting for between 15-45 minutes but it’s definitely worth it.
The gyoza are amazing, they have a thin, slightly crispy skin with a good amount of filling that’s cooked to perfection. They have a large variety of fillings to choose from, which was great for us as we don’t eat beef or pork. My favourite were the Ebi (shrimp) gyoza, we also tried the chicken & mayo, mozzarella & tomato and chicken and wasabi.
The staff are super energetic and make the dining experience really fun. When they bring your drinks to you, you’re encouraged to yell Kanpai! (cheers) the staff yell it after you as do most of the other diners, it’s pretty cool! (The beer is really cheap too)
Oh and make sure you have the chocolate gyoza for dessert…Oh my goodness…
If you happen to be in Kyoto and need a gyoza fix, this is the place to go!
