Key West is the southernmost point of the USA, it’s located closer to Cuba than Miami!
We had pretty average weather while we were in Miami (May) we had rain and thunderstorms all but one of the days we were there, so a change of scene was exactly what we needed… We headed out on a road trip to Key West for the day. The drive takes approximately four hours and is known to be one of the great American road trips of all time!
Key West is the last Florida Key and is linked by the Overseas Highway. You’ll cross Seven Mile Bridge
(mile marker 47) bright blue water will surround you on both sides of the bridge, it really is beautiful. The bridge has been featured in numerous movies including True Lies and 2 Fast 2 Furious.
There are a few places to stop along the way but we chose to drive straight through to Key West (mile marker zero). If you’re thinking of spending a few days in the Keys, you could also visit Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon.
Key West is a quaint and romantic little place. It’s extremely laid back and has the most chilled out atmosphere. What makes Key West unique is it’s Cuban heritage and gingerbread (distinctive wooden decoration) houses. The streets are lined with palm trees and it’s only 4 miles (6.4km) wide!
Walking is probably the best way to see this small island – Stopping wherever you please to take in the intriguing architecture & courtyards. Duval Street is a popular place to check out while you’re here, it has an awesome atmosphere and is lined with shops, restaurants and bars. This street really comes alive at night.
We couldn’t leave without going to the Southern Most point to take a photo of the famous concrete buoy!
Happy Travels, Priti x
PS – Make sure you try the Key Lime Pie while you’re here!
