Meet the Blogger! – Jolanda from Woody World Packer

It’s that time again! This month I’m introducing you to Jolanda from Woody World Packer, blogger and mother extraordinaire!

Jo, give us a quick rundown about yourself –

My name is Jolanda (Jo) I was born and raised in the Netherlands but have been living in Australia for almost 5 years. Apart from being a mum, I’m currently working full time on my website and do freelance writing jobs.

How long have you been travel blogging and what makes you do it?

I started travel blogging in 2008 before my first trip to Australia, so I could inform and update friends and family at home about my travels and experiences. This continued through to 2016, which is when I decided to take it to the next level and we bought our own domain Woody World Packer.

What type of traveller are you and what does that entail?

We do a bit of everything, were a family of 3 – Myself, my husband Lion and our 22 month old son Sem. At this stage we’re living a part time nomadic lifestyle. We lived in Kununurra, one of the most remote places on earth, in the outback of Western Australia for 3.5 years and in August 2016 we sold everything apart from our car and a few belongings and hit the road to destination unknown! We drove cross country Australia and ended up in Cairns, Queensland were we stayed until April 2017. Now we’re travelling through Hong Kong and then onto Europe. We plan on coming back to Australia in July, at that point we’d like to stay in the Whitsunday area in Queensland. We wanted to do this while Sem isn’t at school, making it the best time for us to find the perfect place to settle down and travel in between.

The Australian Outback

If you could live anywhere, where would it be and why?

There are so many places we would like to live but the first place that comes to mind is New York (never been there, but would love to experience that typical New York lifestyle, what you see in the movies!)

Besides the obvious, what is one item you can’t travel without?

Besides my hubby and little man, laptop, phone, camera & bankcard (I know they’re the obvious things) I can’t really think of anything else that I would need!

What has been your best culinary experience while travelling?

Balinese curry and we had the best yellow curry ever in Vang Vieng, Laos.

What’s the best place you’ve travelled to so far and why?

That’s a difficult question as every single country has its own charm and beauty but Myanmar, Laos and the Philippines definitely left a great impression on us because of the relaxed and very welcoming people.

If you had one superpower what would it be and what would you do with it?

Travelling in time – Then we could actually step back into the past, instead of just seeing historical sights and reading/hearing the stories behind them. Or travel forward in time and see how places will develop in the upcoming years.

Favourite quote?

I’ve got a few!

Work smart, play hard.     Be a pineapple, stand tall, wear a crown and be sweet on the inside.     Until you spread your wings, you will have no idea how far you can fly.

If you had the opportunity to travel with someone just once, who would it be and why?

With someone who never had the opportunity to travel before, to watch their reaction and the joy it would bring to them.

Funniest travel moment?

We’ve had quite a lot but what I always find funny is when we bump into people we know on the other side of the world! For example, we were in Myanmar at the airport and we bumped into people friends from our native Netherlands, it’s also happened to us in Spain and in Australia. I mean what are the chances?!

The best piece of advice you have for aspiring travellers?

Be fearless and do it now. Choose experience over things. Do you really need those expensive jeans or that pimped out car??? Save up, buy a ticket and experience the freedom of travel!

  5. Do you snore?!  No
  6. If you could choose a nickname for yourself, what would it be?  Mrs Duracell Battery, because my energy is endless
